Three suspected motorcycle thieves were lynched on Sunday night after a mob attacked and set ablaze a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) outpost at Danmaje in Dawakin Kudu local government area of Kano State.
The State Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, SC Ibrahim Abdullahi, in a statement, said the incident occurred at about 10:30pm when residents of Yansango community reportedly brought the unidentified suspects to the outpost after allegedly apprehending them in an area notorious for motorcycle theft.
He explained that before civil defence officers could commence any investigation, a large mob drawn from several communities, including Yansango, Madinawa, Gagarawa, Limawa, Yankatsari, Danmaje and Gurjiya, converged on the outpost, demanding that the suspects be released to them.
According to him, the situation quickly escalated as the mob cordoned off the office, overpowered officers on duty and forcefully gained entry into the facility.
“The mob reportedly set the outpost on fire and lynched the three suspects before reinforcements could arrive.
“NSCDC officers on duty narrowly escaped the attack, though three personnel sustained varying degrees of injury and are currently receiving medical attention,” he stated.
While noting that the State Commandant, acting on the directive of the Commandant-General of NSCDC, has constituted a committee of inquiry to conduct a full-scale investigation into the incident, noting that the corps has appealed for calm while investigations were underway.
“The committee is expected to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack, identify those responsible and ensure that the culprits are apprehended and brought to justice,” Abdullahi said.
The Corps, however, warned members of the public against taking the law into their hands, stressing that mob action undermines the rule of law and endangers lives, including those of security personnel.
