The Senator representing Kano Central, Rufai Sani Hanga, has described reported plans by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as an act of betrayal.
Senator Hanga, the only NNPP Senator from Kano State, made the remarks during an interview with journalists where he warned that the people of Kano State have historically rejected leaders who turn against those who support their rise to power.
According to him, individuals reportedly urging the governor to join the ruling APC do not have his best interest at heart.
“All those calling on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to join the APC are not his friends,” Hanga said. “Anyone who truly loves him would not ask him to betray the people of Kano, the North and Nigeria, especially at this time of suffering by the poor masses due to sudden subsidy removal and the new tax reforms.”
The Senator stressed that Governor Yusuf’s political journey is closely linked to the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, cautioning against any action he described as ingratitude to a political mentor.
Hanga noted that Kwankwaso mentored the governor from the early stages of his political career.
He dismissed claims that Kwankwaso might be secretly backing the alleged defection as “People thinking that there is some secret plot by Kwankwaso for Abba to move to APC lack forsight, even thinking Kwankwaso will stoop so low to do this is disrespectful to his long-standing political career.”
Senator Hanga warned that a move to the APC would backfire politically, stressing that Kano State voters place a high premium on loyalty.
“In Kano, we don’t cheer a betrayer, we pity the betrayed,” he said, adding that he would personally advise the governor to distance himself from those pushing him towards defection.
Reaffirming his position, the federal lawmaker declared his total loyalty to the NNPP national leader Kwankwaso and the party, saying no elected official acting wisely would consider defecting to the APC at this time.
