The Senator representing Nasarawa North senatorial district of Nasarawa State in the Senate, Godiya Akwashiki, is dead.

He died on Wednesday in India after a protracted illness. He was aged 52.

Although there was no official confirmation of his death by either his family or the Nasarawa State government, different social media platforms have been awash with announcements of his passing.

The late lawmaker had long been missing from public space as he was said to be battling with an undisclosed illness, which kept him incapacitated.

A source close to the family said that although Senator Akwashiki had been sick for long, the news of his demise came as a rude shock to them all.

He said the late Akwashiki touched many lives not just in his immediate constituency but across Nasarawa State and the nation at large.

He noted that his demise was a big blow to the Eggon nation, where he served as a unifying figure and left behind indelible footprints of growth and development.

Before his demise, Senator Akwashiki was the chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs and Vice Chairman of the Media and Public Affairs Committee.

Born in August 1973, Senator Akwashiki was elected into the Nasarawa State House of Assembly in 2011 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where became the Majority Leader.

On his reelection in 2015, he emerged as the deputy speaker of the House. In 2019, he contested for Nasarawa North senatorial seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and won.

He defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and in the run-up to 2023 general election after he was denied the APC ticket for reelection, and eventually won a return to the Red Chamber.

The late Senator Akwashiki was married and blessed with children.
