The Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and the Emir of Ilorin, Alh. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, on Friday, inaugurated a new radio station, Emirate FM 98.5, in Ilorin, the state capital.
Speaking at the event, the governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Communications, Mrs Bolanle Olukoju, expressed delight over the establishment of the new radio station.
He said that his administration would continue to provide an enabling environment for private businesses to thrive and flourish in the state.
AbdulRazaq advised media professionals to shun acts capable of undermining the security situation in the state and the country in general.
The Emir of Ilorin, represented by the Magaji Aare of Ilorin, Alh. Aremu Zubair, cautioned the people of Ilorin against divisive politics.
He urged his subjects to unite and see themselves as members of one big family, irrespective of their political leanings.
In his keynote address titled ‘Excellence in Professionalism, the Key to Modern Radio Broadcasting’, the senior adviser/counselor to Kwara State governor, Alh Saadu Salahu, said the Emirate FM 98.5 was birthed with high sense of patriotism and expectation to consolidate on the gains of the enviable global reputation of Ilorin Emirate as a citadel of learning, scholarship, creative arts, heroic religious missionary activities and trading spanning over 300 years of proud history.
He urged the media to support the security agencies and government with actionable intelligence on crime and criminality and bad elements in the society .
Salahu also urged the media to enlighten students and teachers on the dangers of cultism, drug addiction and other social vices and imperative for discipline.
Earlier, the founder of Emirate FM 98.5 Ilorin, Dr Abdulazeez Arowona, said his passion for developmental journalism prompted him to establish the radio station.
He said the radio station would uphold professionalism in the discharge of its duties and would be fair to all.
