A stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Alh Mohammed Mariam Alhassan, has declared support for Moro local government area to produce the next House of Representatives member for Edu/Moro/Patigi Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections.
LEADERSHIP reports that Moro is the only Yoruba speaking local government among the five local government areas that make up Kwara north and therefore a minority.
The remaining four local governments include Edu and Patigi (Nupe); Kaiama and Baruten (Baruba/ Batonu).
Alhassan cited equity, justice, and long-standing political balance within the constituency as reasons for his stand.
Speaking at a press conference on behalf of the Edu APC Grassroots Mobilisation Movement in Ilorin, the state capital ,Alhassan described the call as a moral, political, and democratic necessity, noting that since the return to democratic rule in 1999, federal legislative representation in the constituency has alternated only between Edu and Patigi local government areas, leaving Moro without representation for nearly three decades.
“As we approach 2027, one reality remains unmistakable: Moro local government area has not been given the opportunity to serve at the federal level.
“ For the sake of fairness, unity, peace, and collective progress, it is only right that Moro be supported to produce the next member of the House of Representatives,” he said.
He stressed that his position was not driven by hostility or sectional interests but by conscience and shared values rooted in both religious teachings and democratic principles.
According to him, Islam and Christianity alike emphasise justice, mutual respect, and the pursuit of the common good, values which he insisted should guide political decision-making in the constituency.
He argued that the need for balance becomes even more compelling given the constituency’s long-standing political arrangement, which is expected to produce a senator from Patigi local government area by 2027.
“With Patigi likely to produce a Nupe-speaking senator, equity demands that Moro be supported for the House of Representatives so that no part of our constituency feels marginalised,” he said.
Describing democracy as a system that thrives on accommodation rather than exclusion, Alhassan warned against a winner-takes-all approach, urging stakeholders to preserve the historic cooperation among Edu, Moro, and Patigi local governments.
