‘Win Or I’ll Be Impeached’, Trump Tells Republicans Ahead Of 2026 Midterm Polls

United States President Donald Trump has warned that failure by Republicans to retain control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections could expose his administration to impeachment efforts by Democrats.

According to ABC News, Trump made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing Republican lawmakers at a party retreat in Washington.

“You’ve got to win the midterms because, if we don’t win the midterms, they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” Trump said. “I’ll get impeached.”

The President cautioned that losing control of Congress would not only stall his legislative agenda but also open the door to investigations into his administration. He urged Republican lawmakers, who currently hold a slim majority in the House of Representatives, to set aside internal divisions and present a united front.

Trump encouraged party members to focus their campaign messaging on Republican positions on gender issues, healthcare, and election integrity, while appealing to voters grappling with rising living costs.

“They say that when you win the presidency, you lose the midterm,” he said. “I wish you could explain to me what the hell is going on with the mind of the public.”

He made only a brief reference to inflation, attributing the problem to policies inherited from Democrats, and urged Republicans to highlight gains in the US stock market as evidence of economic progress.

Trump also appeared to downplay the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by his supporters. His comments came as Democrats marked the fifth anniversary of the riot, accusing Republicans of attempting to “whitewash” the events of that day.

The retreat was held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In a largely unscripted speech lasting more than an hour, Trump repeated several disputed claims, including an assertion that Washington, D.C., had recorded no homicides for months.

He predicted an “epic midterm victory” for Republicans, while criticizing party members he accused of resisting party unity.

All seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate will be contested in November 2026. Historically, no sitting U.S. president has avoided losing House seats in midterm elections since George W. Bush in 2006.

Trump also urged lawmakers to counter Democratic messaging on healthcare, including proposals to extend subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.

“All of these issues are very important issues, but you can own healthcare,” he told lawmakers. “Figure it out.”

He called on conservative members to show flexibility on contentious issues such as the Hyde Amendment, which restricts federal funding for abortion.

Trump was impeached twice during his first term but acquitted by the Senate on both occasions. “I got impeached twice on nothing,” he said.

Some House Democrats have already introduced articles of impeachment against Trump during his second term, allegations the White House has dismissed.

Republicans currently hold a narrow majority in the House, a situation Trump said limits the authority of Speaker Mike Johnson.

“You can’t be tough when you have a majority of three,” he said.
