In a significant leap forward for football technology, FIFA and Lenovo have revealed a suite of AI-powered innovations designed to revolutionise officiating, enhance match analysis, and boost fan engagement ahead of the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup 2026â„¢.
Unveiled at Lenovo Tech World 2026 in Las Vegas by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Lenovo Chairman and CEO Yuanqing Yang, the “Football AI” initiative introduces Football AI Pro, AI-enabled 3D player avatars, and an advanced Referee View broadcast. These technologies underscore FIFA’s commitment to digital innovation and AI, as outlined in its 2023-2027 Strategic Objectives.
Lenovo, the Official Technology Partner for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027â„¢, is providing comprehensive AI-enabled solutions across FIFA’s operations.
A cornerstone innovation is Football AI Pro, a generative AI knowledge assistant developed to support all 48 participating teams. This tool aims to democratise access to sophisticated pre- and post-match analytical capabilities, levelling the playing field by providing consistent, in-depth intelligence derived from hundreds of millions of FIFA data points. It will offer insights in multiple formats and languages, though it is not for use during live play.
Significant advancements in semi-automated offside technology come with AI-enabled 3D player avatars. Players will be digitally scanned to create precise 3D models, enabling reliable tracking during matches. These models will also be integrated into broadcast footage, offering a more engaging and realistic display of VAR offside decisions for fans globally. The technology was successfully trialled at last year’s FIFA Intercontinental Cup™.
Furthermore, a new iteration of Referee View will utilise AI-powered stabilisation software to smooth footage from referee cameras in real-time. This will deliver a higher quality, first-person perspective, enhancing transparency and engagement for viewers.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated, “The FIFA World Cup in 2026 is going to be the greatest show ever on planet Earth… FIFA and Lenovo are fully embracing digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence, ‘Football AI’, to support teams and match officials, while also providing a new mind-blowing experience to fans worldwide.”
Lenovo Chairman and CEO Yuanqing Yang added, “FIFA World Cup 2026, powered by Lenovo AI, will be most technologically advanced in history. We are providing complete IT solutions, enhancing the delivery and experience of the tournament at every level.”
Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for further exciting developments as FIFA and Lenovo continue to innovate for unforgettable experiences.
