NWFL Imposes N2.5m Fine On Ibom Angels, Orders 3 Closed-door Matches After Uyo Incident

The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) has sanctioned Ibom Angels FC with a fine of N2.5 million following crowd disturbances and the assault on Bayelsa Queens players and officials during their Premiership match in Uyo on Wednesday.

The disciplinary measures, announced on Thursday, 8 January 2026, followed an examination of match officials’ reports and video evidence from the NWFL Premiership encounter, which took place on 7 January 2026 at the Uyo Township Stadium in Akwa Ibom State.

Supporters of Ibom Angels were found to have invaded the pitch and attacked the Bayelsa Queens players and officials—actions deemed a serious violation of the league’s regulatory framework and the principles of fair play.

Consequently, the NWFL levied a N2.5 million fine on Ibom Angels for multiple regulatory breaches. This sum includes N1.5 million for breaching Article 26.1, which pertains to assault, intimidation, and offensive behaviour, and an additional N1 million for bringing the game into disrepute and failing to provide adequate security.

Furthermore, the league has mandated that Ibom Angels play their next three home fixtures behind closed doors, in accordance with Article 16.4 of the NWFL regulations.

Commenting on the decision, NWFL Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi stated that the sanctions were essential to protect the league’s integrity and ensure the safety of all participants.

“The safety of players, officials, and match personnel is non-negotiable,” Shabi remarked. “What occurred in Uyo represents a serious breach of our regulations and the values of the NWFL. We will impose stricter actions against any club whose supporters engage in violence or conduct that brings the league into disrepute.”

The affected matches to be played without spectators include Ibom Angels’ home games against Ekiti Queens, Edo Queens, and Naija Ratels, scheduled for January and February.
