Former African 100m champion and national record holder, Seun Ogunkoya, has lauded the Niger Delta Games for its strong emphasis on identifying and developing young sporting talent.
Ogunkoya, a celebrated athlete in his prime, stressed that any nation neglecting youth talent discovery is failing in fundamental sports development. He believes the Niger Delta Games’ focus in this area will ensure a steady emergence of grassroots talent in Nigeria.
“Firstly, the Niger Delta Games is a remarkably well-conceived programme,” stated Ogunkoya, who serves as an ambassador for the event. “Credit to the organisers for prioritising youth talent discovery. When you consider it, the Niger Delta is a prime breeding ground for sporting talent; everything indicates we’re moving in the right direction.”
Ogunkoya, who now dedicates his time to coaching young athletes, confirmed he would be bringing some of his own discoveries to the Games, scheduled for 20th-27th February in Benin City, the Edo State capital. “Naturally, I’m bringing a group of young athletes from Ondo State, and we’re eagerly anticipating the Games.”
Now in its second edition, the Niger Delta Games will see over 3,000 athletes compete across 17 sporting disciplines. Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Managing Director of Dunamis-Icon Limited, the event organisers, confirmed that only athletes under 20 years of age are eligible to register.
