Marrakech is set to host a monumental clash this Saturday’s evening as Nigeria’s Super Eagles face off against Algeria’s Fennecs in a highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinal. The Grand Stade de Marrakech, Morocco’s fourth-largest city, will be the epicentre of this footballing duel, kicking off at 5 pm local time. Both camps exude confidence, with coaches Eric Chelle and Vladimir Petković emphasizing mental fortitude and tactical precision.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has stressed the importance of unwavering focus for his squad. “It’s crucial for me to maintain focus on the pitch,” Chelle stated. “While energy matters, the mindset is paramount. Our group will remain united.”

Chelle acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by Algeria, a team he holds in high regard. “This match is critical against a formidable opponent. We are in the process of determining our game-plan. I hold a deep respect for this Algerian team; their staff operates with exceptional professionalism.”

Dismissing any notions of revenge for their 2019 AFCON semi-final defeat, Chelle affirmed, “I’m not dwelling on revenge for 2019. My priority is to compete fiercely and secure qualification.”

The last AFCON encounter between these two footballing giants saw Algeria emerge victorious in the 2019 semi-final at the Cairo International Stadium. A stunning free-kick from Riyad Mahrez in added time secured the win for Algeria, leaving Nigerian goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi with no chance.

On the Algerian side, Bosnian-Swiss manager Vladimir Petković believes his Fennecs possess the quality to extend their impressive winning streak against the Super Eagles. Nigeria has not tasted victory against the North African nation since a 3-1 triumph in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo in November 2016. Petković highlighted the psychological aspect of the game: “The most important thing is the state of mind. It all starts from there, and from that point of view, we are irreproachable. We have the reliability and the quality.” He further added, “Tomorrow (today), we need to be just as good defensively as offensively. That will be paramount. All the details will matter against Nigeria. Nothing should be left to chance. We have the quality. We believe in ourselves and we just have to play a big game.”

This today’s fixture marks the 25th senior-level clash between the two nations. Historically, the Fennecs have the slight edge, with 10 victories to the Eagles’ nine in regulation time. Five previous encounters have ended in draws. However, Nigeria did claim a memorable penalty shootout victory in one of these drawn matches – a semi-final at the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations, also hosted by Morocco. After a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time, Nigeria triumphed 9-8 in a dramatic sudden-death penalty shootout. The late Samuel Okwaraji’s fierce shot, deflected in by defender Abderrazak Belgherbi, gave Nigeria the lead, only for Rachid Maatar to equalise for the Fennecs. The legendary Peter Rufai’s save from Lakhdar Belloumi ultimately secured Nigeria’s win.
