The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Senegalese referee Issa Sy to officiate Saturday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final clash between Nigeria and Algeria in Marrakech.
CAF had earlier named Omar Artan for the encounter but later withdrew the appointment amid rising concerns over officiating decisions at the tournament.
Sy is familiar with the 2025 AFCON, having served as Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the group-stage match between Morocco and Tanzania.
His appointment is expected to ease tensions ahead of the high-stakes showdown as both Nigeria and Algeria battle for a place in the semi-finals.
The Super Eagles secured their quarter-final spot with an emphatic 4-0 win over Mozambique, while Algeria edging past DR Congo 1-0 after extra time.
Saturday’s fixture will revive memories of the 2019 AFCON semi-final, which Algeria won 2-1 thanks to a late free-kick from Riyad Mahrez.
The kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Nigerian time.
