The wife of the Minister of Defence, Mrs Oghogho Musa, has advocated greater support for the families of fallen heroes who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation.

She spoke yesterday, at the Humanitarian Day, organised as part of the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in Abuja.

She said, “While our soldiers defend the nation, the nation must in turn defend their dignity, welfare and future.”

Mrs Musa stated that the gathering was a stark reminder that the defence of the nation extends far beyond the battlefield, reaching into homes, communities and hearts across Nigeria.

She added; While our soldiers bear the visible weight of duty, their families carry an equally profound burden, quietly, consistently and with steadfast courage.

“It is therefore both fitting and necessary that this year’s celebration shines a light on the human side of military service.”

She commended the Ministry of Defence, under the leadership of Gen. Christopher Musa, and the Service Chiefs for sustaining and strengthening the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day as a statutory and symbolic national event.

According to her, the deliberate inclusion of humanitarian-focused activities reflects a growing understanding that the welfare, morale and dignity of soldiers and their families are central to national security and unity.

Speaking on the theme, “Celebrating the Strengths Behind Our Soldiers,” she said it captures a simple but powerful truth that behind every uniform is a family of spouses, children and parents whose support forms the unseen pillars of the Armed Forces.

“True patriotism is demonstrated not only in moments of conflict but in daily acts of responsibility, resilience and kindness.

“We also pause to remember our fallen heroes, those who paid the supreme price in service to our country. We honour their mission and extend our deepest gratitude to their families.

“Your strength continues to inspire the nation, and supporting your families remains a solemn national duty,” she added.

She reiterated that national strength is built not only through arms and strategy but through compassion, unity and mutual support.

Mrs Musa therefore urged barracks youths to imbibe the values exemplified by men and women in uniform, discipline, courage, integrity, empathy and a commitment to service.

Earlier, the wife of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Mrs Hassana Pheelangwa, stressed the need to appreciate soldiers and their families for their courage, dedication and sacrifices.

She noted that behind every soldier who serves the nation with bravery is a spouse who patiently waits, a child who learns to cope with absence and a family that continues to nurture and support.
