The Nigerian Federal Government has declared that the Super Eagles’ decisive 2-0 quarter-final victory over Algeria’s Desert Foxes in the Africa Cup of Nations, currently underway in Morocco, is a clear demonstration of Nigeria’s sporting prowess.
In a statement released yesterday, Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasised that the win bolstered Nigeria’s cultural diplomacy and soft power initiatives. He added that this commendable achievement has significantly boosted national morale and reaffirmed Nigeria’s long-standing tradition of excellence in international sports.
The Ministry, while congratulating the Eagles, highlighted that sport, particularly football, remains a crucial cornerstone of Nigeria’s cultural diplomacy and is a key Presidential Ministerial Deliverable within the current foreign policy framework.
“Through football, Nigeria showcases core national values such as unity, resilience, discipline, fair play, and collective ambition, thereby strengthening people-to-people connections and enhancing the country’s international image beyond traditional diplomatic engagement,” the statement read.
The Ministry also acknowledged the patriotic gesture of Mr. Abdul-Samad Rabiu, who, on 10th January 2026, publicly pledged substantial incentives to the Super Eagles in recognition of their outstanding performance and as encouragement for continued success.
“This commendable act reflects responsible national citizenship and underscores the constructive role of the private sector in advancing Nigeria’s soft power, national cohesion, and international goodwill.
“Through their conduct and performance on the pitch, the Super Eagles continue to serve as effective cultural ambassadors for Nigeria, fostering continental solidarity, mutual respect, and positive engagement across Africa and the wider international community. Their progress in the tournament reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful competition, cultural exchange, and constructive engagement through sports diplomacy.
“As the team progresses to the semi-finals, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges Nigeria’s diplomatic missions and diaspora communities worldwide to champion this achievement as a symbol of national unity, partnership, and global relevance. The Ministry remains dedicated to strategically utilising sports and other cultural assets as instruments of foreign policy in support of national development goals.
“The Government and people of Nigeria stand firmly behind the Super Eagles and wish them continued success as they proudly and honourably carry the nation’s flag forward,” the statement concluded.
