Super Eagles Captain Ndidi To Miss Crucial AFCON Semi-final Against Morocco

Nigeria’s Super Eagles face a significant challenge in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final clash against hosts Morocco on Wednesday, as influential team captain Wilfred Ndidi has been ruled out due to suspension.

The defensive midfielder, a vital cog in the Nigerian machine, accumulated caution cards in the last two knockout matches – against Mozambique in the Round of 16 and during their impressive 2-0 quarter-final victory over Algeria.

His absence leaves a considerable void in the Super Eagles’ midfield, with Club Brugge’s Raphael Onyedika the most likely candidate to step into the starting XI. How Nigeria adapts to Ndidi’s absence against Africa’s top-ranked nation remains a key question.

Despite the setback, Nigeria boasts an impressive attacking arsenal. Coach Eric Chelle acknowledged that the presence of recent African Player of the Year winners Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman simplifies his tactical approach. The Super Eagles are currently the tournament’s leading scorers with 14 goals, with Osimhen bagging four and Lookman contributing three. “We are a group and there are some very good players who are waiting for the chance to show something,” Chelle stated, hinting at the depth within his squad.

Meanwhile, Morocco will be looking to capitalise on home advantage, with a raucous crowd of nearly 70,000 expected at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

However, Atlas Lions coach Walid Regragui is acutely aware of Nigeria’s potent threat. “We will need to be strong mentally but when you get to the AFCON semi-finals you need to raise your concentration levels, run more to stop Nigeria taking a breather or be able to play with the same impact,” warned Regragui.

The coach, who famously led Morocco to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, is under immense pressure to deliver the AFCON trophy on home soil. He candidly addressed the scrutiny: “In my country it’s like this – you need to accept that when you are the coach of Morocco. I stay focused on my team. I fight for my country and the critics every time. What I say to my players is I can’t fight about this. What is important is what they do on the pitch.”

The stage is set for a captivating encounter with high stakes for both nations.
