At least six persons have died in a fatal road crash involving a trailer and a Canter truck at Gaba, a community along the Potiskum–Damaturu highway in Yobe State on Thursday.
Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the accident occurred when the two vehicles collided head-on, allegedly after the Canter truck driver drove against traffic.
The impact of the crash was described as severe, leaving both vehicles badly mangled and trapping occupants inside.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Yobe State Command, were immediately mobilised to the scene for rescue operations.
LEADERSHIP reports that due to the extent of the wreckage, FRSC personnel had to deploy a crane to lift the wreckage of the trailer in order to access trapped victims.
Also, four occupants of the trailer were reportedly crushed to death on the spot, while two passengers in the Canter truck also lost their lives as a result of the collision. Other occupants of the Canter truck sustained injuries.
The bodies of the deceased were deposited at Potiskum Specialist Hospital morgue.
The FRSC has warned motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules and avoid dangerous driving, especially on major highways, to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
