The Nigeria National League (NNL) has levied a substantial fine of N4.3 million against Gateway United and banished them to Ekiti for their next two home fixtures, following an assault on match officials. The incident occurred during their recent fixture against Smart City FC at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Danlami Alanana, the NNL’s Chief Operating Officer, confirmed the sanctions, stating that Gateway United had breached multiple league rules and regulations. The match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was marred by violent scenes where Gateway FC supporters reportedly overpowered security personnel and attacked officials. Club officials were also implicated in the fracas.

Mr. Toyin Jimoh of Gateway FC has been identified as a significant security risk, having issued repeated threats to match officials before kick-off, contributing to the hostile atmosphere that escalated into violence after the final whistle.

The fines include N1 million for pitch encroachment and disturbances, N3 million for the assault on match officials, and N300,000 to cover medical expenses for the injured officials. Furthermore, Mr. Jimoh has been suspended for four NNL matches.
