Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command attached to the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Squad have arrested four suspected members of a notorious “one-chance” robbery syndicate operating within Abakpa-Nike and other parts of Enugu metropolis.

Spokesman of the Police Command in Enugu, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed that the suspects were apprehended while operating with a tricycle, allegedly prowling for unsuspecting victims.

He identified the arrested suspects are one Ndubuisi Achioko (male, aged 62), Nnaji Okeh (male, aged 55), Nwobodo Dennis (male, aged 57), and Chinedu Idam (female, aged 36), all residents of Abakpa-Nike, Enugu.

Ndukwe averred that during interrogation, the suspects confessed to being members of a larger “one-chance” robbery syndicate operating from the Abakpa-Nike axis of Enugu State.

He stated that the suspects have since been arraigned before a competent court and remanded in a Correctional Centre, while intensive efforts were ongoing to identify, track, and arrest other fleeing members of the criminal syndicate.

Ndukwe also disclosed that operatives of the Command attached to the Adani Division, in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, on January 18, 2026, at about 6:00 a.m., foiled a kidnapping attempt at the Ngene-Ukwu axis of the Adani–Nsukka Road following an intense gun duel with suspected armed kidnappers.

He stated that during the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects was neutralised, while an AK-47 rifle loaded with two rounds of live ammunition was recovered.

Ndukwe averred that other members of the criminal gang escaped with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the neutralised suspect and other members of the kidnapping gang had emerged from a nearby bush with the intent to kidnap occupants of a vehicle plying the route.

“Upon sighting the operatives, the suspects opened fire, but the operatives responded with superior firepower, leading to the neutralisation of one of the kidnappers, while the others fled into the surrounding forest.

“Efforts have been intensified to trace, identify, and arrest the fleeing suspects, as well as dismantle the entire criminal network. Members of the public, particularly residents and healthcare providers in the area, are urged to promptly report anyone presenting with gunshot wounds or suspicious injuries to the nearest Police Station or security formation.

“The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, has commended the gallantry and professionalism displayed by the joint operatives. He reassures the public of the unwavering commitment of the Police and other security agencies to rid Enugu State of violent criminal elements and ensure the continued safety and security of all residents,” he stated.
