Trump To Charge $1bn Permanent Membership Fee For New Global ‘Board Of Peace’

United States President Donald Trump has proposed a $1 billion fee for countries seeking permanent membership on his newly conceived international body, the ‘Board of Peace’, according to a draft charter obtained by AFP on Monday.

The proposed organisation, which Trump will chair, aims to “promote stability, restore dependable and lawful governance, and secure enduring peace in areas affected or threatened by conflict,” the document states.

According to the charter, each member-state would serve a term of no more than three years unless they contribute more than $1 billion in cash within the first year effectively granting them permanent membership.

“Each Member State shall serve a term of no more than three years from this Charter’s entry into force, subject to renewal by the Chairman,” the draft reads.

“The three-year membership term shall not apply to Member States that contribute more than USD $1,000,000,000 in cash funds to the Board of Peace within the first year of the Charter’s entry into force.”

The White House has reportedly reached out to several world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, to join the board.

Initially conceived to oversee the rebuilding of Gaza, the Board of Peace charter suggests a far broader mission, extending beyond the Palestinian territory. It establishes a main board, a Palestinian “committee of technocrats” to govern Gaza, and an “executive board” with an advisory mandate.

“The Board of Peace is an international organisation that seeks to promote stability, restore dependable and lawful governance, and secure enduring peace in areas affected or threatened by conflict,” the charter adds.

In language seemingly directed at the United Nations, the document asserts that the new body must have “the courage to depart from approaches and institutions that have too often failed.”

The move came as Trump intensified his criticism of multilateral organisations, having recently announced plans to withdraw the United States from 66 international agreements and institutions, roughly half of which are affiliated with the UN.

Membership of the board would be restricted to states invited by the chairman, who also retains the authority to remove member nations. The removal, however, could be vetoed by a two-thirds majority of other members. Trump would also have the power to name his own successor.

The Board of Peace began to take shape over the weekend, with invitations reportedly extended to the leaders of Egypt, Turkey, Argentina, and Canada. Other members named include U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, senior negotiator Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

However, Israel has objected to the composition of the proposed “Gaza Executive Board,” which includes Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Qatari diplomat Ali Al-Thawadi, both of whom have been outspoken critics of Israeli policy in Gaza.
