As part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations, the Court of Appeal has listed 360 appeals for hearing in a special session held at its Lagos Division, aiming to reduce the growing case backlog.
The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongbam Mensem, who presided over the opening session, said that the measure was put in place to address a rising backlog and improve judicial efficiency.
Justice Mensem also described the special sitting as timely and necessary, stating that Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial hub, attracts a high number of appellate cases.
She explained that this special session reflects the court’s ongoing effort to improve access to justice while handling an increasing number of cases.
The President further revealed that 16 panels, comprising 40 justices from various divisions, will preside over the sessions, and that a total of 360 appeals have been listed for hearing.
Justice Mensem said, “These panels will meet throughout the week in scheduled sessions, some at the Lagos Division and others at the National Industrial Court, to maximise judicial resources.
“This setup ensures the best use of our facilities,” she said, thanking the National Industrial Court for its support in providing courtrooms and accommodations” She stated
Justice Mensem urged lawyers and litigants to be well-prepared and to strictly follow procedural rules, warning that unprepared counsel might hinder the goals of the sitting.
On behalf of the Lagos Bar, human rights lawyer Ebun-olu Adegoruwa praised the Court of Appeal’s special session and Jubilee initiatives, assuring the court of cooperation to ensure the swift resolution of cases.
He also called for improved infrastructure and funding for the judiciary, promising an ongoing partnership to strengthen the administration of justice.
