President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s horse, “Renewed Hope,” has triumphed at the Hadejia International Horse Racing Competition, securing first place and solidifying its reputation as the fastest horse on the African circuit. The successful conclusion of the event in Hadejia marked a significant milestone for horse racing in Nigeria, drawing participants from across the nation and abroad.

Alhaji Tajuddeen Dantata, National Chairman of the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria (HRFN), lauded “Renewed Hope’s” exceptional performance, stating it positions Nigeria for a stronger presence on the global horse racing stage. Dantata confirmed that plans are underway for the horse to represent Nigeria at the upcoming Dubai World Cup, citing its “strength, speed and endurance” as key attributes for competing against top international contenders.

The HRFN’s ambition is to make Nigeria the first African nation to participate competitively in the Dubai International Horse Racing Competition. Consultations with the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Sports Commission, and the UAE Embassy in Nigeria are ongoing to secure the necessary clearances.

Hadejia, a town rich in equestrian traditions, was hailed by Dantata as a fitting host for the competition, paying homage to Jigawa State’s profound cultural heritage. He emphasised that the event underscores the federation’s dedication to expanding the sport, nurturing local talent, fostering economic opportunities, and encouraging youth involvement. Recent efforts by the HRFN to enhance governance, race organisation, training programmes, and veterinary standards have elevated the sport’s profile in Nigeria.

Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Life President of the federation and Etsu Nupe, underscored that horse racing transcends mere sport, embodying a tradition of discipline, respect, courage, and the unique partnership between horse and rider. He declared the Renewed Hope International Horse Racing Season 2025/2026 a pivotal moment in repositioning Nigerian horse racing on regional and international platforms.

Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Umar Namadi, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), highlighted the event’s role in revitalising cultural heritage in Northern Nigeria and pledged continued state government support for horse racing.

Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar Bida, National Coordinator and Sarkin Dawaki Nupe, explained that the competition aimed to honour tradition while providing a structured platform for all involved, with a focus on mentorship and talent development for young jockeys. He revealed that Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali participated as international partners.

The Minister of Culture and Tourism, represented by the Permanent Secretary, reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting cultural development and traditional sports across Nigeria.

“Renewed Hope,” a two-and-a-half-year-old horse born in Bida, Niger State, and sired by a thoroughbred stallion out of a Sudanese mare, ultimately clinched a car prize in addition to its first-place finish. In total, six cars were awarded at the event. Notably, President Tinubu’s Cup, titled “Royal Champion,” along with a car, was won by a horse from Burkina Faso.
