The Lagos State Government has disbursed a total of N40 million to the families of 20 deceased officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) who died in active service.
Each family received a cheque of N2 million at a presentation ceremony held on Wednesday at the LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi, Lagos.
Speaking during the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, said the gesture was a demonstration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s appreciation of the officers’ contributions to maintaining order and safety on Lagos roads.
“It was in that same spirit that Mr. Governor graciously approved that the families of our personnel who died in active service be supported with N2 million each, not as payment for loss, because no value can equal the price of a life, but as a tangible expression of the state’s recognition of duty, courage, and sacrifice,” Giwa said.
He noted that the disbursement followed due process and collaboration among relevant ministries and agencies.
“Today, we are gathered to fulfil that commitment. The paperwork and due process have now been completed, thanks to the support and cooperation of the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, and the General Manager of LASTMA,” he added.
“To the families before us, on behalf of Mr. Governor and the Lagos State Government, we say thank you. Thank you for giving us fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and children who chose service over comfort; who chose Lagos over themselves. Your pain is deeply acknowledged, and their sacrifice will not be forgotten.”
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, hailed the deceased officers as “embodiments of patriotism” who displayed selfless dedication while ensuring smooth traffic flow across the state.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Olawale Musa, commended the initiative, describing it as a morale booster for public servants and a symbol of good governance.
“This act will strengthen public trust in government institutions and serve as a moral lodestar for serving officers,” Musa said.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Silifat Adeyemo, widow of the late Rotimi Adeyemo, thanked the Lagos State Government for honouring the loved ones of the deceased officers.
“We are deeply grateful to Mr. Governor for remembering our families and ensuring that the memories and sacrifices of our loved ones are recognised,” she stated.
