The Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has expressed concern over the poor attitude of some School Support Officers (SSOs), Area Education Officers (AEOs), and Arabic Visiting Teachers (AVTs) toward their official responsibilities.
The director of monitoring and evaluation of SUBEB Bauchi, Malam Abbas Abdulmumini, made this known while addressing participants at a mini training session held at the Katagum Local Education Authority Conference Hall in Azare yesterday.
Abbas explained that the training was organised due to the observation that many SSOs, AEOs, and AVTs lack a proper understanding of the scope of their assignments. He stressed that their duties include regular resumption visits, daily monitoring of schools, supervision under the Continuous Quality Assurance (CQA) framework, follow-up activities, and examination oversight.
In a statement issued by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Isah Mohammed Jungudo, Abbas emphasised that officers’ observations and recommendations must be accurate and consistent to allow for proper documentation and prompt action by relevant authorities.
Also speaking at the session, the Director of Schools Services, SUBEB Bauchi, Malam Zuhairu Usman, expressed dissatisfaction with the attitude of some teachers toward their duties.
He described teachers as among the most respected and rewarded individuals in society, as reflected in religious teachings, and urged them to demonstrate commitment and professionalism.
Earlier, in his welcome remarks, the Education Secretary of Katagum Local Education Authority, Malam Mukhtar A. Habu, who was represented by the Head of Quality Assurance, Yakubu Mohammed, commended SUBEB’s management for its sustained efforts to maintain standards in basic education across the state.
During the question-and-answer session, some supervisors raised concerns over poor school attendance by teachers and pupils, particularly in the Magwanshi area of the Madara District, where some schools were reported not to have fully resumed for the term.
The supervisors therefore called on the relevant authorities to take immediate action to prevent a recurrence of such lapses.
