The Lagos Polo Club has announced that the 2026 NPA/GTCO Lagos International Polo Tournament will commence on 27th January, with over 25 teams vying for prestigious honours.
Mr. Adeyemo Alakija, President of the Lagos Polo Club, revealed at a well-attended press briefing that this international tournament, recognised as one of the world’s premier polo events, will span three weeks of exhilarating matches. The grand finale is scheduled for 15th February at the historic Ribadu Polo Ground in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Mr. Alakija expressed gratitude to main sponsor GTCO, along with other sponsors and partners, for their continuous support. This backing has been instrumental in solidifying the event’s reputation as one of Africa’s largest polo tournaments since its inception in 1904. The Lagos Polo Club is committed to delivering exceptional value for all involved.
He further highlighted the club’s revitalisation through ongoing infrastructure upgrades, ensuring player and horse safety meets international standards. “Ambitious teams, bolstered by international professionals and top-class Argentine thoroughbreds, will compete for four major trophies and numerous subsidiary accolades,” he stated.
Mr. Usman Dantata (Jnr), Lagos Polo Tournament Manager, detailed the competing teams, noting the participation of professional players from Argentina, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. The coveted Majekodunmi Cup stands as the tournament’s top prize, alongside the Chapel Hill Denham Open Cup, the Lagos Low Cup, and the highly contested Lagos Silver Cup, which will conclude the festival.
Subsidiary prizes include the Oba of Lagos, Governor’s Cup, Adedapo Ojora Memorial Cup, Sani Dangote Cup, the Argentine Ambassador’s Cup, the Independence Cup, Lagos Heritage Cup, and the Cancer Awareness Bowl.
The Chapel Hill Denham Open Cup will be contested in the opening week, with the esteemed Majekodunmi Cup taking centre stage in the second week. The Low Cup and Silver Cup, attracting the largest number of teams, will draw the curtain on the international fiesta in the third and final week.
“With intensified team preparations and the calibre of players confirmed, alongside the anticipated high standard of games, the 2025 Lagos International Polo Tournament is set to establish a new benchmark for excitement and prestige,” Mr. Dantata affirmed.
