North Korea, on Tuesday, fired what appeared to be a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan, Japan’s defence ministry said, heightening tensions in the Korean Peninsula and raising fresh security concerns in East Asia.
According to Tokyo, the suspected missile launch was detected in waters off Japan’s coast, prompting close monitoring by Japanese authorities.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) also confirmed that it had identified a “projectile” launched toward what Seoul refers to as the East Sea.
The latest test marks Pyongyang’s second missile launch this month, coming just days after North Korea fired multiple missiles shortly before South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol travelled to China for a high-level summit.
North Korea has significantly intensified missile testing in recent years, drawing condemnation from the United States, Japan, and South Korea, who view the launches as violations of UN Security Council resolutions.
Security analysts say the renewed testing campaign is aimed at enhancing precision-strike capabilities, strengthening deterrence against Washington and Seoul, and testing weapons systems that could be exported, potentially to Russia, amid its ongoing war in Ukraine.
“Pyongyang is clearly accelerating its weapons development programme, both for strategic leverage and external military partnerships,” analysts noted.
The missile launch also comes ahead of a landmark congress of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party, expected in the coming weeks, its first such gathering in five years.
In preparation for the congress, leader Kim Jong Un has ordered the “expansion and modernisation” of the country’s missile production facilities, signalling a continued focus on military modernisation despite international sanctions.
Regional powers are expected to convene emergency consultations as concerns grow over the implications of North Korea’s escalating ballistic missile programme for regional and global security.
