In an eventful Matchday 23 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Nasarawa United and Abia Warriors both faced setbacks, dropping crucial points at home as they settled for 1-1 draws against Enyimba International and Wikki Tourists, respectively.

The results allowed league leaders Rivers United to maintain their position at the top of the table, despite their match against El-Kanemi Warriors being postponed due to their ongoing participation in the CAF Champions League.

At the Lafia Township Stadium, Nasarawa United started strong against a resilient Enyimba side. The home team’s early pressure paid off when they took the lead in the 27th minute, courtesy of a well-placed header from their striker. However, the visitors, known for their fighting spirit, equalized shortly after the halftime break, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to slot home their goal. The match intensified as both teams sought to find a winner, but ultimately, neither could break the deadlock, resulting in a share of the points.

Meanwhile, at the Umuahia Township Stadium, Abia Warriors had a similar story unfold. They took the lead in the first half through a stunning long-range effort that had the home crowd buzzing. However, Wikki Tourists responded swiftly, leveling the score in the 62nd minute with a well-worked team goal. With both teams pushing for a decisive second goal, the match ended in a stalemate, leaving Abia Warriors frustrated after failing to capitalize on their home advantage.

Following these matches, Rivers United remains firmly at the top of the league standings with 41 points, holding two outstanding matches in hand. Nasarawa United and Abia Warriors are closely trailing in second and third place, both on 39 points, intensifying the competition for the title as the season progresses.

In other notable matches yesterday, Plateau United secured a solid 2-1 victory over Enugu Rangers, showcasing their attacking prowess, while Kano Pillars managed a narrow 1-0 win against Katsina United, further solidifying their mid-table position.
