When Governor Agbu Kefas walked into Nigeria’s top security headquarters in Abuja, the visits were more than ceremonial courtesy calls where he met with the heads of security agencies.

For the people of Taraba State and the agencies, the visit is not only historic but a moment for shared ideas, intelligence, and synergy.

Governor Agbu Kefas was not just deliberate in his actions and decision to strengthen partnerships but calculative in his steps as part of a broader strategy to entrench peace and stability in Taraba State.

For the second time in recent months, the Taraba State governor convened high-level engagements with the leadership of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The governor was accompanied on the visit by top government officials, where he assured them of his administration’s commitment to supporting efforts to combat insecurity in the state.

Governor Kefas has not only pushed for a safer and more peaceful state since he assumed office, but he has remained consistent in his resolve that security is non-negotiable.

The engagements with the security chiefs, even as a retired colonel in the Army, reflected not just political responsibility but a personal conviction to safeguard lives and property. Hence, Governor Kefas met the security chiefs with ease and outlined Taraba’s unique but difficult terrain, vulnerabilities, and emerging threats. The governor also proposed collaborative solutions with the agencies anchored on intelligence sharing and rapid response where necessary.

Specifically, at the Naval Headquarters, attention shifted to Taraba’s expansive waterways, where Governor Kefas raised concerns over how these water bodies could be exploited by criminal elements if left unchecked.

Both the Taraba State Government and the Naval authority unanimously agreed to intensify collaboration and surveillance operations as a proactive approach to securing the state’s riverine corridors.

At the Nigerian Army Headquarters, an environment well known to the governor created an atmosphere of homecoming, with military officers who shared common knowledge and professional roots with him. The meeting enabled robust discussions between the governor and the Army leadership, where he renewed his assurance of providing adequate logistics support.

This buttresses the fact that Taraba’s peace and security are a collective responsibility that requires all hands on deck.

At the Police Headquarters in Abuja, the story was not different, as the visit also centered on entrenching peace in all parts of Taraba State.

The consistent support for the Nigeria Police Force and the improved inter-agency coordination by Governor Kefas’ administration are commendable and exemplary, as no governor in recent times has accorded such significant support to the police.

It is on this basis that, in recognition of his engagement and cooperation, the governor was honoured with an award as the “Most Police-Friendly Governor” by the police high command.

Perhaps the most personal of the visits was to the Department of State Services, where long-standing professional relationships framed discussions around intelligence-led security. The meeting gave the agency’s leadership the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to working closely with the Taraba State Government to prevent threats before they escalate.

In a nutshell, during the visits, the security chiefs openly acknowledged the depth of the engagements and the calibre of persons in the governor’s entourage, describing them as rare among sub-national leaders. This underscores the seriousness attached to Taraba’s security concerns.

Beyond the plaques and commendations, the visits sent a clear signal that Taraba’s security architecture is being strengthened through trust, partnership, and constant dialogue.

For Governor Kefas, the mission of the visits to all the security chiefs appears clear and direct—to secure the state, restore confidence, and create the stability needed for development to thrive across Taraba State.

As the Taraba State Government continues to confront security challenges peculiar to many states, these engagements point to an approach rooted not only in enforcement but in cooperation, foresight, and shared responsibility.
