Funding: US Mission In Nigeria Suspends Social Media Updates, Assures Visa Services Continue

The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced a temporary suspension of regular updates on its official X (formerly Twitter) account following a lapse in United States government appropriations, while assuring Nigerians that passport and visa services will continue as circumstances permit.

The Mission disclosed this in a statement posted on its verified X handle on Saturday, explaining that the funding lapse has affected full operations.

According to the statement, the Mission’s social media platforms will not be updated regularly until normal operations resume, “with the exception of urgent safety and security information.”

“At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at US Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits,” the statement read.

The Mission advised members of the public seeking information on consular services and operational status to visit the official US travel website, adding that further updates would only be provided once full operations resume, except in cases involving urgent safety or security matters.

The development comes as the United States government entered a partial shutdown after a midnight funding deadline passed without Congress approving a 2026 budget.

According to reports, the disruption is expected to be limited, with the US House of Representatives set to move early next week to ratify a Senate-backed funding deal.

The funding lapse followed a breakdown in negotiations reportedly triggered by Democratic lawmakers’ anger over the killing of two protesters in Minneapolis by federal immigration agents, which stalled talks over additional funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Reacting to the situation, Senate Democratic Minority Whip, Dick Durbin, criticised the administration’s approach to immigration enforcement.

“Instead of going after drug smugglers, child predators, and human traffickers, the Trump Administration is wasting valuable resources targeting peaceful protestors in Chicago and Minneapolis,” Durbin posted on social media. “This Administration continues to make Americans less safe.”

Despite the partial shutdown, the US Mission in Nigeria reassured visa applicants and US citizens that essential consular services would remain available as the situation unfolds.
