The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Justice Olubunmi Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The confirmation followed the consideration and unanimous adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, presented at plenary by its Chairman, Senator Adegbonmire Adeniyi Ayodele (Ondo Central).
Presenting the report, Senator Adegbonmire said the committee thoroughly screened the nominee and found him suitable for elevation to the apex court.
“The committee screened the nominee and asked him questions, which he answered intelligently,” Adegbonmire said.
He noted that the committee was satisfied with Justice Oyewole’s competence, experience and judicial temperament, and therefore recommended his confirmation.
Following the presentation, the Senate adopted the report without dissent, thereby confirming Justice Oyewole’s appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court.
LEADERSHIP reports that President Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate seeking legislative confirmation of Justice Oyewole’s nomination.
The letter was read on the floor of the Senate by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary penultimate Tuesday.
The request followed Justice Oyewole’s recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC) at its 110th meeting held on January 13 and 14, 2026.
Justice Oyewole, who currently serves as the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Enugu Division, was recommended alongside 35 other candidates for appointment into various judicial offices across the country.
Justice Oyewole, born on May 13, 1965, hails from Ila-Orangun, Osun State, and fills the South-West slot vacated following the retirement of the immediate-past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
In his remarks after the confirmation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio congratulated Justice Oyewole on his elevation and prayed for divine guidance as he assumes office.
“I pray that God will grant him the wisdom to do justice to all and sundry, irrespective of circumstances,” Akpabio said.
He also commended the chairman and members of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for their diligence.
“I congratulate the chairman of the committee, Senator Adegbonmire Adeniyi Ayodele, and all members for the speedy manner in which they carried out this assignment,” he said.
Akpabio further congratulated President Tinubu on the successful nomination.
“I congratulate President Bola Tinubu on finding a square peg in a square hole, which has made it possible for the Senate to collectively and unanimously endorse this nomination as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” he stated.
He expressed optimism that the appointment would further strengthen justice delivery in the country.
“Through Justice Oyewole and others already there, justice will be served to the common man in this country, and justice will be served even to the senators,” Akpabio added.
