The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), CG Adewale Adeniyi, has ordered the reopening of the Tsamiya border port to allow economic activities to boost economic opportunities between the border communities in Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon after its closure for many years.
He gave the order in Birnin Kebbi during a stakeholders’ meeting with Governor Nasir Idris, ministers, representatives from Niger and Benin Republics, ex-Customs Service officers from Kebbi and other senior Customs officers.
Adeniyi added that it has become necessary for the NCS to reopen the border because of its vital importance to the economic growth of the country.
Another reason the CG mentioned is the congestion of trucks on the highway border where over 200 trucks blocked the transportation channels in the area.
“So, we are reopening this highway in Tsamiya border in Kebbi State to decongest these trucks and allow the economic operators to operate freely in alignment with the Customs laws,” CG Adeniyi said.
He warned operators to desist from operating outside the corridors approved by the Customs Service else they would be arrested.
He also commended the efforts of Governor Idris and his counterparts in other states in neighbouring countries for their support and cooperation towards the success of reopening of the border.
