Good Governance and Accountability Watchdogs have commended the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) for what they described as historic achievements in revenue generation and enforcement, following the Service’s record of over ₦7.2 trillion revenue in 2025.
Addressing a press conference, the group led by its Coordinator, Comrade Zakari Hashim said the figure represents the highest revenue performance in the history of the NCS and one of the most significant across Africa, attributing the feat to leadership reforms, innovation, and improved institutional discipline.
The watchdogs praised the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for what they called visionary and reform-driven leadership, noting that the Service has become more transparent, accountable, and result-oriented under his watch.
According to the group, the performance of the Customs Service aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which places emphasis on improved governance, enhanced security, and revenue mobilisation to support national development.
They also highlighted the impact of the Customs Management System (CMS), known as B’Odogwu, describing it as a major digital reform that has strengthened monitoring, blocked revenue leakages, improved compliance, and reduced corruption within the Service.
“The implementation of the CMS has significantly enhanced transparency and efficiency in public revenue administration,” the group said.
Beyond revenue generation, the Tin Can Island Area Command of the NCS was commended for its operational success in intercepting 2,366 packs of Cannabis Indica, valued at over ₦4.7 billion. They praised the professionalism of Customs officers and the seamless collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to which the seized narcotics were handed over for further investigation.
The group said the seizure underscores the Service’s commitment to combating drug trafficking, transnational crime, and economic sabotage, while safeguarding public health and national security.
Special commendation was also extended to officers and men of the Tin Can Island Command for their role in implementing the Comptroller-General’s reform agenda, noting the strategic importance of the command in trade facilitation, port security, and revenue mobilisation.
They further acknowledged ongoing nationwide efforts by the NCS to curb smuggling, strengthen border security, and prevent the importation of prohibited and substandard goods, actions they said continue to protect local industries and the economy.
Expressing confidence in the leadership of the current Customs management, the group said it expects even stronger performance in 2026 and pledged its continued support for reform-oriented and innovation-driven policies of the Service.
Hashim called on citizens and stakeholders to support the operations of the Nigerian Customs Service in the interest of economic stability, national security, and institutional integrity.
