The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Yobe State University, Prof. Muhammad Bashir Tahir, has warned staff against absenteeism, stating that any worker who fails to report for duty will have their salary withheld.
Prof. Tahir issued the warning on Thursday during a tour of faculties and key units of the university on the second day of his official visit. He stressed that discipline and accountability would be central to his administration, noting that while staff welfare remains a priority, negligence of duty will not be tolerated. “Non-teaching staff who are not coming to work will have their salaries stopped. There will be no room for truancy in this university,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor also directed staff on study leave to submit progress reports in line with university regulations, warning that failure to comply would result in suspension of salary.
While emphasising discipline, the VC reassured staff and students of his commitment to enhancing welfare and providing a conducive environment for teaching and learning. He revealed plans to upgrade the university clinic into a comprehensive clinical complex capable of performing surgical operations, aiming to improve healthcare services within the institution.
Addressing the university’s financial sustainability, Prof. Tahir tasked the Investment Unit with strengthening internally generated revenue through innovative and sustainable ventures, stressing that financial stability is key to institutional growth.
Expressing concern over recurring mass failures among students, he called for improved teaching standards, proper coverage of course outlines, and fair assessment.
He urged both academic and non-teaching staff, as well as students, to embrace discipline, responsibility, and collective commitment to ensure academic excellence and sustainable development at the university.
Prof. Tahir’s administration signals a firm stance on accountability while prioritising welfare, infrastructure, and academic quality as central pillars of his leadership.
