Human rights advocate and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has paid tribute to his ally, Omoyele Sowore, on his 55th birthday anniversary on Monday, describing him as a “foremost human rights activist and relentless defender of the oppressed and the vulnerable.”
In a statement issued on Monday, Adeyanju lauded Sowore’s courage and consistency in speaking truth to power, noting that his activism has remained a symbol of hope in a country where dissent often comes at a personal cost.
“Over the years, I have watched him continuously choose his principles over comfort by challenging injustice and demanding accountability from those in power, in a country like Nigeria, where speaking up often comes at a high cost,” Adeyanju said.
He described Sowore’s courage as “intentional and rooted in a genuine belief that Nigeria can be better,” emphasising that the activist’s sacrifices including multiple arrests, detentions, and court cases reflected a deep commitment to justice and reform.
“The arrests, detention, endless court cases, and personal risks he has endured are sacrifices I do not take for granted. I celebrate not just his years, but his resilience and unwavering commitment to the common man and the downtrodden,” he added.
Adeyanju concluded his message with heartfelt wishes, commending Sowore’s steadfastness and lifelong pursuit of good governance.
“His journey reminds me that real reform is never easy, but it is always worth fighting for. Happy birthday, Omoyele Sowore!”
