A traditional ruler, the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Epiphany Azinge, has lamented the low students enrolment at the Federal College of Education (Technical) Asaba, Delta State.
He made the lamentation on Monday when he visited the college and saw the dilapidating infrastructure, insisting that students enrolment should not be less than 10,000.
The monarch donated the sum of N5 million to enable the school buy six standing air-conditioning units owing to the heat at its auditorium, where he was received.
According to the monarch, management and other stakeholders should not rely on the federal government to come and do everything for the school, but that all hands must be on deck to grow the lnternally Generated Revenue (IGR), of the school which it can use to address some of its challenges.
“This is a federal institution in Asaba, and with my experience and exposure, I believe that you should be our target, and we will not let it slip. Whatever we can do to increase the enrolment of this College, you can count on me, and I will drive the process.
“We cannot rely on the federal government to come and do everything for us. If you grow your enrolment, you will grow your lnternally Generated Revenue (IGR), which you can use to address some of your challenges.”
Recall that last year, the Provost of the College, Prof. Josephine Anene-Okeakwa had refuted reports by LEADERSHIP that lecturers were more than students studying at the institution just as the Federal Ministry of Education is also paying the idle lecturers.
It was discovered that in the Departments of Early Child Education and Adult Education, there were few students while the school of Technical Education is offering scholarship to students as a form of incentive but the result is still not encouraging.
However, the good news is that Senator Ned Nwoko of Delta North has put a bill in motion to change the College into a University of Education.
“It is advisable to make it a university of education that could offer courses in the arts, social sciences, sciences and technical education to attract a variety of students” the Senator stated.
