A prominent member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee, Samir Sobha, has issued a heartfelt apology to Morocco following a contentious incident involving their national team, the Atlas Lions, during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

Sobha candidly admitted that significant procedural errors were made during the showpiece event and acknowledged that Morocco suffered a clear injustice under the competition’s established regulations.

“I want to implore the Moroccan Federation to forgive us for the injustice inflicted upon them,” Sobha stated emphatically. “The rules were not adhered to as they should have been in this match. They were unequivocally robbed. It’s absolutely clear. After the Senegalese team departed the pitch, all their players ought to have received a yellow card.”

Despite his frank admission, the CAF official was keen to clarify that he was not advocating for a reversal of the result or for the Senegal national football team to be stripped of their hard-won title.

“I’m not suggesting we shouldn’t award the trophy to Senegal. What transpired, transpired; we cannot alter that outcome,” he added. “However, we must set aside our egos and recognise that a profound injustice was done to the Moroccan national team. Having meticulously studied the competition’s regulations, I am absolutely certain my position is correct.”

There are now mounting calls for stricter adherence to regulations to prevent similar controversies from overshadowing future tournaments and to uphold the integrity of the sport.
