Police Invite WAEC Official Over Alleged Cyberstalking, Defamation

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has invited a staff member of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Olanrewaju Fadehan, to appear before the centre in Abuja over an alleged case of cyberstalking and criminal defamation.

Fadehan, who is the head of Examinations at WAEC’s office covering Anambra State, is expected to report to the NPF-NCCC in Abuja later today.

The invitation, signed by the director of the NPF-NCCC, AIG Akaninyene Ezima, comes shortly after the Lagos State High Court issued an interim injunction restraining Fadehan from publishing or circulating alleged defamatory statements concerning WAEC and its director-general, Dr Amos Dangut.

Confirming the development, Fadehan said he had received the court documents and was aware of the court’s order.

“They have even done that already. At least, they sent me a court paper yesterday (Monday). That one is an interim injunction that I should not post anything any longer,” he said.

On the police invitation, he added: “They are taking me to the cybercrime centre in Abuja. Wednesday, I am supposed to appear before them.”

The interim order was made on Monday by Justice Yetunde Adesanya in Suit No. LD/ADR/6656/2026.

The court restrained Fadehan from “publishing, broadcasting, circulating or disseminating” any alleged defamatory, maligning or injurious falsehood concerning WAEC, its examinations, results and certificates, as well as the character or integrity of Dangut.

The order applies to publications in video, audio, written or other formats and covers platforms including YouTube and WhatsApp.

The injunction is expected to lapse after seven days unless renewed by the court.

WAEC and Dangut are seeking N500 million in general damages for alleged libel, N300 million in aggravated and exemplary damages and N25 million in costs, bringing the total claim to N825 million.

They are also asking the court to compel Fadehan to retract the alleged defamatory publications, issue a public apology and permanently remove the materials from all platforms.

The legal action followed a series of viral videos in which Fadehan called for a review of the recently released 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results, alleging irregularities in the conduct and administration of the examination.

He also raised allegations of financial impropriety against WAEC management, including issues relating to the supply of calculators, students’ identification cards and charges imposed on candidates and other service seekers.

Fadehan further alleged that some candidates were not provided with appropriate calculators during the examination, claiming that the situation contributed to poor performance in Mathematics and other calculation-based subjects.

Following the allegations, Fadehan petitioned the WAEC Board, the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examining Bodies and the Minister of Education.

In the petitions, he alleged that instead of addressing his complaints, WAEC subjected him to disciplinary proceedings and placed him on interdiction.

In a separate letter to Fadehan, WAEC’s lawyers, Union Attorneys, accused him of publishing a series of videos containing what they described as inaccurate information and reckless statements against the examination body and its director-general.

Among the publications cited by the lawyers were “Tyranny in WAEC, Nigeria: Dangut must go,” “WAEC: My alleged offence and the overbearing sanctions,” “WAEC’s MND: Petition to ASF, National Assembly and Minister for Education plus appeal,” and “Anomalies in WAEC – Series 1: I won’t wait.”

The lawyers also cited another video titled “Dangut is a thief,” which they alleged formed part of the publications attacking WAEC and its management.

The police invitation and court proceedings are separate developments arising from the dispute, with the NPF-NCCC now expected to question Fadehan over the alleged cyberstalking and criminal defamation claims.
