Club Brugge’s manager, Ivan Leko, has voiced his significant disappointment regarding the suspension of key midfielder Raphael Onyedika for the upcoming second leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off against Atlético Madrid.
Onyedika, who was instrumental in Brugge’s exhilarating 3-3 draw against Diego Simeone’s side at the Jan Breydelstadion on Wednesday evening, received a booking in the 76th minute, triggering an automatic suspension.
The 24-year-old defensive midfielder was a standout performer in the thrilling encounter, not only scoring Brugge’s opening goal but also providing the assist for Christos Tzolis’s third, just a minute before the final whistle.
Leko acknowledged the challenge his team faces without their influential player. “We don’t have another Rapha, so we’ll have to find another solution,” Leko was quoted as saying on the club’s official website, highlighting Onyedika’s unique qualities and importance to the squad.
The decisive return fixture is scheduled for next Tuesday at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, where Club Brugge will now have to strategise to overcome Atlético without their vital midfielder.
