Suspected Lakurawa bandits have attacked some communities in Arewa local government area of Kebbi State and killed 34 people.
The incident, our correspondent gathered, happened in Kangiwa town yesterday evening, while another incident occurred on Wednesday, targeting several villages, leaving families devastated and forcing residents to flee for safety.
According to sources, the attackers moved between settlements, opening fire on civilians in what has become one of the deadliest single-day incident recorded in the area in recent months.
The hardest-hit community was Mamunu, where 16 people were killed. Awashaka recorded five youths killed, while Masama lost three residents. Two people each were killed in Gorin Dena, Kamzo, Dan Mai Rago, Tungar Bature, and Tungar Tsoho communities. By nightfall, residents across the wider Kangiwa axis reportedly remained gripped by fear amid concerns of further attacks.
The incident shows the worsening security situation in Kebbi North Senatorial District, with affected communities calling on local and state governments to take urgent action.
Residents have expressed frustration over what they describe as an inadequate response and are urging the Kebbi State Government and Arewa Local Government Council to implement stronger security measures to prevent further loss of life.
Efforts to reach the Spokesman of the Kebbi State Police Command, SP Bashir Usman, for confirmation were unsuccessful; his phone rang twice, but there was no response.
