Chief medical director (CMD) of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Dr Terungwa Stephen Hwande, has commended Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia for improvements in healthcare and infrastructure.

He expressed optimism that its kidney transplant services would commence before the end of Alia’s administration.

Hwande, who made this known during a media briefing in Makurdi, announced the resumption of full medical services following the suspension of the industrial action by the Association of Resident Doctors, BSUTH chapter and the National Association of Nurses and Midwives at the state level.

The briefing followed the official suspension of the strike action that had disrupted full services in recent weeks.

Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Tsenzughul Moses, in a statement explained that with the suspension of the industrial action by the ARD and NANNM, government and union leaders were working diligently to implement agreed terms and timelines.

The CMD cautioned residents of Benue State over the rising cases of Lassa fever, urging the media to intensify public awareness campaigns to help curb the spread of the disease across affected communities.

He disclosed that the hospital has fully resumed operations and was managing confirmed cases, including an affected medical staff member, at its isolation centre, assuring the public of its preparedness to tackle the outbreak.

According to Dr. Hwande, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has upgraded testing facilities at Federal Medical Centre Makurdi, encouraging residents to access testing and adopt preventive measures, including environmental fumigation.

Hwande also commended the media for their continued support.
