Final preparations were underway for the spectacular opening ceremony of the 2nd Niger Delta Games, commencing today at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, Edo State.
State delegations arrived in quick succession at the Benson Idahosa University Games Camp for athletes and coaches, as rehearsals for the ceremonial aspects of the opening day continued late into the night.
Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Chairman of Dunamis-Icon Limited, the trademark owners of the Niger Delta Games, expressed a blend of confidence and satisfaction, alongside a touch of anxiety to prevent any last-minute hitches. “We have progressed significantly with preparations, and while I am immensely satisfied and excited with our plans, one cannot afford to drop their guard at such a crucial time,” Ikpokpo informed the media after the draw for the ball games.
Delta State was the first to arrive, followed by Bayelsa and Imo States. “The process here is for state contingents to proceed directly from their vehicles to the accreditation tents situated near the hostels,” explained Fred Edoreh, the Project Director overseeing the seamless operation.
Top-Tier Entertainment
Edi Lawani, Chairman of the Cultural and Entertainment Committee, was busy across the stadium’s main bowl, where sound checks, visual displays, and choreography were being perfected. “It promises to be two memorable hours, as we have arranged A-list musical and comedy performances,” Lawani, the nation’s leading entertainment impresario, revealed while pacing the field in his distinctive baggy shorts.
The opening ceremony will feature headline performances by Patoranking and gospel singer Eben.
