Nigerian Stadia Risk FIFA, CAF Ban Over Substandard Seating, Monimichelle Boss Warns

Ebi Egbe, a prominent stadium construction specialist and CEO of Monimichelle Group, has voiced his strong frustration regarding the prevalence of outdated spectator seating across Nigerian stadia. Egbe, a Bayelsa State native, highlighted that the continued use of “flat spectator seats” is a significant barrier to achieving modern CAF and FIFA stadium compliance.

In a recent post, Egbe emphasised, “Flat spectator seats are no longer acceptable for modern CAF and FIFA stadium compliance. Unfortunately, these low back plastic seats remain the most common seating type across many of our stadiums in Nigeria.” This stark reality, he argues, puts many Nigerian venues at a disadvantage when aspiring to host international competitions.

Egbe explained that current stadium infrastructure standards now mandate “ergonomically designed, lumbar support high back seats” to enhance spectator comfort, safety, and overall venue aesthetics. He stressed that beyond mere comfort, these compliant seating systems are an integral part of the comprehensive stadium assessment criteria employed during CAF and FIFA inspections.

The construction specialist issued a stern warning about the repercussions of neglecting this crucial aspect of stadium infrastructure. “Failure to install approved spectator seating can therefore contribute to a stadium failing CAF/FIFA compliance testing — even when the playing surface meets required standards,” he stated. This means that even if a pitch is world-class, substandard seating could still lead to a venue being deemed unsuitable for major tournaments.

Egbe concluded by urging a shift in perception, advocating that “upgrading spectator seating should be treated as a critical infrastructure priority rather than a cosmetic enhancement.” He believes that for Nigerian stadia to truly compete on the international stage and attract prestigious events, a fundamental investment in modern, compliant seating is no longer optional but an absolute necessity.
