Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) President Victor Ochei has hailed Seun Ogunsakin’s historic victory at the US Open Junior Championships, describing the youngster’s breakthrough as evidence that Nigerian tennis is regaining its place on the global stage.

Ogunsakin ended a 35-year wait for a Nigerian Grand Slam main-draw singles victory after recording a landmark win at the junior tournament in New York.

According to the NTF, the achievement makes Ogunsakin the first Nigerian since tennis legend Nduka Odizor in 1990 to win a Grand Slam main-draw singles match. Odizor achieved the feat at the Australian Open that year.

Reacting to the breakthrough, Ochei said the achievement vindicated the federation’s focus on grassroots development, international exposure, and the creation of opportunities for young Nigerian players.

“This is another monumental feat since we assumed office,” Ochei said.

“After our historic records in the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers, Ogunsakin has done it again. He has ended a 35-year wait since our legend, Nduka Odizor.

“This is not luck, this is the result of deliberate work, of believing in our young talents and giving them a platform.”

Ogunsakin’s achievement comes as the NTF seeks to reposition Nigerian tennis by placing greater emphasis on junior development and pathways to international competition.

Ochei said the federation’s objective was to develop players capable of competing on the biggest stages rather than merely producing domestic champions.

“On behalf of the Board of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, I congratulate Ogunsakin for his courage, discipline and brilliance,” he said.

“He has shown that Nigerian tennis is back on the global map. This is what we promised – to take tennis from the streets of Nigeria to the centre court of the world. And we are just starting.”

The NTF said its development strategy includes increased international exposure for juniors and partnerships with the private sector, while competitions such as the DAVNOTCH Open are being used to provide platforms for emerging talents.

Ogunsakin’s success is also significant for African junior tennis, with three boys from African countries reportedly reaching the US Open Junior main draw for the first time since 2003.

Ochei dedicated the historic achievement to young Nigerian players competing in academies across the country, urging them to draw inspiration from Ogunsakin’s progress.

The NTF president said the breakthrough should reinforce aspiring players’ belief that a career on the international stage is within reach.

Ogunsakin is expected to continue his campaign at the US Open Junior Championships, with Nigerian tennis fans hoping his landmark victory will mark the beginning of a sustained presence for the country at Grand Slam events.

For Ochei and the NTF, the youngster’s breakthrough offers an early test of their promise to rebuild Nigerian tennis from the grassroots and return the country to the centre stage of world tennis.
