It was a weekend of contrasting emotions for Nigerian players in the English Premier League, with Alex Iwobi playing a starring role for Fulham, while Tolu Arokodare and Ola Aina endured disappointing results for their respective clubs. Alex Iwobi was instrumental in Fulham’s commanding 3-1 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The Nigerian midfielder not only assisted Raúl Jiménez’s opener but also sealed the win with a late goal in the 85th minute after a clever set-up from Harry Wilson.

Compatriot Calvin Bassey also put in a full 90-minute shift, contributing to Fulham’s defensive solidity. Samuel Chukwueze, however, missed the encounter due to injury.

Meanwhile, Tolu Arokodare will be left to rue a crucial 43rd-minute penalty miss as Wolverhampton Wanderers fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The Nigerian striker’s early gaffe proved costly, as André snatched a dramatic winner for the Eagles in the 90+3rd minute, leaving Wolves to ponder what might have been.

Elsewhere, Ola Aina was on the losing side as Nottingham Forest suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool. Despite a spirited performance from Forest, Alexis Mac Allister’s late strike in stoppage time handed Liverpool all three points.

Taiwo Awoniyi was not listed for the match. Forest, under new manager Vitor Pereira, can take encouragement from their display but will be frustrated by their inability to find the back of the net, with Callum Hudson-Odoi notably missing their best chance.
