Mexico’s most wanted drug lord and leader of the feared Jalisco New Generation Cartel has been killed during a military operation.
According to local media reports, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, popularly known as “El Mencho”, was reportedly fatally wounded during a dawn operation conducted by the Mexican army on Sunday in the central-western state of Jalisco.
Mexico’s defence ministry said Oseguera Cervantes died from his injuries while being airlifted after the operation, according to the Reuters news agency.
The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which originated in Jalisco State, has expanded its influence to establish an almost nationwide presence across Mexico.
Following the operation, unconfirmed reports emerged throughout Sunday of vehicles being set ablaze and armed men sighted on streets in parts of Jalisco and other areas.
The United States had previously offered a $15 million reward for information leading to Oseguera Cervantes’ capture.
Meanwhile, the US State Department issued a shelter-in-place advisory for American citizens in Jalisco State, Tamaulipas State, and parts of Michoacán, Guerrero and Nuevo León states.
