Rick Macci, the former coach of Serena Williams, has expressed his optimism regarding the legendary tennis player’s potential return to the sport.
Macci, who mentored both Serena and her sister Venus during the early 1990s, shared his insights with the French publication L’Equipe, suggesting that Williams is indeed gearing up for a comeback.
“She’s training with numerous sparring partners—male players, in fact,” Macci remarked. “She has also been practising with Alycia Parks, a close friend, in South Florida. I have no doubts about her return. I’ve always believed she would make occasional appearances alongside Venus in doubles matches.”
However, Macci emphasised that Williams is not limiting her ambitions to doubles alone. “She’s going all out. If she didn’t believe she could compete with the best and win matches, she wouldn’t pursue this. It’s absolutely certain that she will dive back into competition.”
Since clinching her last Grand Slam singles title in 2017, Williams has not participated in any tournaments, her last appearance being at the 2022 US Open.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion is now able to enter tournaments after rejoining the tennis anti-doping testing pool last year.
