Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM) formerly Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM) institute of Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards (IPPESS) has held a symposium on procurement as it graduated 525 students.
In his address during a One-Day symposium held in Makurdi, JOSTUM vice chancellor, Prof Isaac Itodo, said responsible procurement was no longer optional but imperative.
The vice chancellor explained that the universities were not only centres of learning and research but also institutions of leadership and example where choices made in procurement, resource allocation, and institutional governance reflect their values and shape the societal impact.
Itodo said institutions entrusted with public resources must ensure that the procurement systems go beyond compliance.
He added that institutions must promote sustainability, encourage innovation, support inclusive economic participation, and safeguard future generations.
Itodo emphasised that procurement decisions influence supply chains, environmental outcomes, community livelihoods, and economic development.
Itodo stated that, “This symposium also underscores our university’s commitment to interdisciplinary engagement. The theme resonates strongly with our mandate as an institution rooted in agriculture, technology, and innovation. Environmental stewardship and social equity are pillars upon which sustainable development rests”.
In her welcome speech, center Leader and Director Institute of Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM), Lami Nnamonu, urged participants to think boldly on how procurement can drive environmental stewardship in an era of climate uncertainty.
Nnamonu added that the symposium ignites partnerships, inspire reform, and strengthen the collective resolve to institutionalise sustainable procurement practices in Benue State, Nigeria and beyond.
