A legal practitioner, Barr. Awele Ideal has called for a more decisive and uncompromising approach to cases of rape and sexual abuse, insisting that such crimes must never be trivialized or swept under the carpet.
Speaking during an advocacy engagement in Asaba, Barr. Ideal emphasized that rape is a grave violation of human rights and dignity, stressing that society must move beyond silence, stigma, and victim-blaming.
According to her, “Cases of rape should never be taken lightly. The trauma, emotional scars, and long term impact on victims especially young girls are too severe for society to treat with indifference.”
She urged law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and families to prioritize the protection of the girl child, noting that prevention, swift investigation, and proper prosecution are key to deterring offenders.
Barr. Awele also highlighted the need for stronger enforcement of existing laws against sexual violence, safe reporting channels for victims, psychological and legal support for survivors and community education to break the culture of silence.
She maintained that protecting the girl child is not just a legal obligation but a moral responsibility. “When we fail to protect our girls, we fail our future. Every girl deserves to grow up safe, heard, and empowered,” she stated.
Advocates at the event echoed her sentiments, calling for collaborative efforts between government institutions, civil society groups, and religious organizations to create safer environments for children.
Barr. Awele reaffirmed her commitment to continue pushing for reforms and public awareness campaigns aimed at strengthening child protection mechanisms and ensuring justice for victims of sexual abuse.
