The senate of the University of Ibadan has approved the withdrawal of 226 undergraduate students over poor academic performance in the 2024/2025 academic session.
The decision was reached at a senate meeting held last Monday, where the results of graduating and non-graduating students were ratified.
The senate directed that students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average below 1.0 be advised to withdraw from the institution.
Following the approval, the affected students have been denied access to the university’s portal for further registration, effectively bringing their academic programmes at the institution to an end.
The institution’s public relations officer (PRO), Mrs Akinpelu Adejoke, who confirmed the withdrawal, said the 226 students cuts across all the faculties and programmes from 100 level to 300/400 levels.
“The 226 students were advised to withdraw based on poor performance,” she said.
Findings revealed that the affected students cut across various faculties and levels, from 100 to 500 level.
A source within the university disclosed that the Faculty of Science recorded the highest number of withdrawals, with 79 students affected. This was followed by the Faculty of Technology with 45 students and the Faculty of Agriculture with 35.
Both the College of Medicine and the Faculty of Education had 18 students each asked to withdraw, while Renewable Natural Resources recorded 10 affected students.
Other faculties impacted include Arts with nine students; Economics and Management Sciences, four; Law, three; Veterinary Medicine, two; and Environmental Design and Management, three.
The withdrawal of students over poor academic performance is a recurring development at the institution, an exercise students popularly refer to as “tsunami.” In 2018, no fewer than 408 students were asked to withdraw on similar grounds.
