APC Group Backs Tinubu On Local Government Autonomy, State Police

The APC Grassroots Governance Group (APC G3) has called on Nigerians across political, ethnic and regional divides to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as he advances what the group described as some of the boldest structural reforms in the nation’s democratic history.

The group said the push for full local government autonomy, the removal of electricity generation from the Exclusive Legislative List, and the active pursuit of state policing represent courageous and long-awaited steps toward a better country.

APC G3 stressed that these measures are designed to benefit all regions of the country and should not be misconstrued as punitive actions against any section of Nigeria. According to the group, the reforms are national in scope and intention, aimed at strengthening governance, improving service delivery, and promoting equity across the federation.

In a strongly worded statement issued by its national coordinator, Amechi Chuks Oyema, APC G3 said the reforms require collective national support to move from proposal to full implementation.

“These are not cosmetic adjustments. They are fundamental corrections to structural imbalances that have hindered Nigeria’s growth for decades,” Oyema said. “The President has demonstrated rare political will. Nigerians must now demonstrate unity of purpose to ensure these reforms succeed.”

According to the group, granting autonomy to local governments will empower communities, strengthen grassroots development, and enhance accountability in governance. It added that decentralising electricity generation would unlock investment, boost industrial growth, and significantly reduce the nation’s energy crisis.

On security, APC G3 described the move toward state policing as a decisive intervention capable of improving intelligence gathering and rapid response to threats, while strengthening overall national security architecture.

The group warned that historic opportunities such as this must not be undermined by partisan politics or narrow interests.

“President Tinubu has taken a bold step in confronting long-standing constitutional challenges. He must be supported — not distracted — in seeing these reforms through to full implementation,” Oyema said.

APC G3 reaffirmed its unwavering support for the administration and urged the National Assembly, state governments, civil society, and citizens to close ranks in the national interest.

“These reforms are about Nigeria’s future. This is the time to stand behind leadership that is willing to act,”the statement concluded.
