Undefeated boxing icon Floyd Mayweather is reportedly setting his sights on Nigeria for a landmark exhibition bout in late 2026, a move that could see the West African nation host one of its largest sporting spectacles ever.
This highly anticipated event, dubbed the “Motherland Rumble,” is slated to take place during Nigeria’s festive “Detty December” season, just months before the country’s pivotal 2027 general elections.
Nigerian-born promoter Keane Anis, CEO of Frontrow Fight Series and Head of The Money Team (TMT) Africa, confirmed that discussions are well underway to bring Mayweather back to Nigeria.
“I can confirm that Floyd still wants to stage a ‘Motherland Rumble’ in Nigeria before the 2027 elections, provided the right conditions are in place,” Anis stated.
He previously brought Mayweather to Nigeria four years ago when the boxing legend first expressed his desire to fight in the “motherland.”
Mayweather’s global exhibition tour for 2026 kicks off in Athens, Greece, this June against kickboxing champion Mike Zambidis, followed by a potential blockbuster rematch with Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas, USA, in September.
However, it is the proposed Nigerian event that is generating significant buzz, with speculation swirling around potential opponents. Industry insiders are discussing a possible rescheduling of a bout with Mike Tyson or a high-profile rematch against UFC superstar Conor McGregor, either of which would guarantee immense global attention and tourism for Nigeria.
Anis, who has been instrumental in expanding Mayweather’s international exhibition footprint, envisions the “Motherland Rumble” as more than just a boxing match. Through TMT Africa, he aims to position Nigeria as a premier destination for elite global sporting entertainment, blending sport, culture, tourism, and international collaboration to showcase the nation on the world stage.
For Nigeria, hosting such a high-profile event would undoubtedly draw significant international media focus and potentially boost its global profile as it approaches a crucial electoral period.
The proposed Motherland Rumble is envisioned not only as a boxing event but as a cultural celebration blending sport, entertainment, tourism, and international collaboration while showcasing Nigeria on the world stage.
