Iran’s response to the joint attack launched on 27 February by the United States and Israel included various measures, such as closing the Strait of Hormuz.
In fact, Iran threatened to set ships ablaze if they entered the strait.
What is the Strait of Hormuz?
- It is a 55-kilometre-wide strait between Iran and Oman that separates the Persian Gulf from the Arabian Sea.
- It ranks among the world’s busiest and most strategically vital shipping routes.
- About 31 per cent of global oil shipments, approximately 13 million barrels of oil, move through the Strait every day.
As expected, the closure has disrupted oil and gas shipments from the region and unsettled markets worldwide.
Overall maritime traffic through the strait has decreased by 70 per cent since the closure, with 18 loaded and 37 unloaded tankers still present in the Persian Gulf.
Blocking the Strait will undoubtedly impact world oil prices.
